Expats in Korea, those teaching English or working in large multinationals can complain with the best with them about how bad their working conditions are in Korea. And if you spend more than a few minutes on a forum you’ll see and read the negativity and “horror” stories of teaching English in Korea. Hagwon Wonjangnim (Academy boss) who didn’t pay on time or makes them do extra prep work or stupid things like they didn’t it when I swaped classes with another teacher without notifying them and the stories go on. Some rants you can show empathy for and others you think that the person couldn’t hold down a job anywhere with their “the world owes me everything” attitude.
Anyway I’m not debating that some do get screwed and have a bad experience. No, I’m sure they do. There is also a large majority of people living and working in Korea that have positive overall experiences. However, when you see stories about migrant workers in Korea and the truly brutal conditions and low wages well then being asked to do something that wasn’t originally in your contract doesn’t seem to look so bad. Read the comment below for some new perspective on your life in Korea.
Unhappy with the minimum wage in Korea
Why is it that the minimum wage is barely raised but the cuts on the accomodation and food allowance is being enforced by the employers In my last company we had to pay one hundred thousand won for our accomodation and maintenance fees and only got an allowance of only 10만원 for our food allowance Our accomodation used to cost us only 1만원 We are literally living in a box that is suffocating in the summer and freezing in the winter We are also starving because 10만원 is not enough for 1 month given the inflation on the cost of food We are even lucky that we still have food allowance most of my other friends do not have food allowance or are not being given food by the company We are slowly dying from extreme over work and hunger What are you doing to address this situation
Korea’s minimum wage is 4110 won/hr.
