The population of Seoul is 10,464,051! Yup, that does seem about right. It seems like half of them are on line 2 in the mornings and evenings. This is the 6th year that the population has risen, although last year was the slowest it had risen as a result of lower birth rates and fewer foreigners registering as citizens in Seoul.

Some other interest stats put out by the Seoul Governemet showed that the number of newborn babies fell to 91,029 in 2009, compared with 100,337 in 2003 and 126,742 in 1999. On the other hand Seoul’s population like most of Korea is getting older on average with the number of people aged 65 and more rocketing up 77.85 percent to 942,946 people in 2009, compared with 530,190 people in 1999.
Another scary statistic and one that impacts the environment more than we realize is the growing rise of single households. The number of single households jumped 66.05 percent from a decade ago to 1,441,632 in 2009, from 868,217 in 1999. We can see how this trend also takes place in other countries (Australia, Canada, US, etc…) and leads to inefficiencies in how we live. David Holmgrem does a great job in his video “Retroffiting the Suburbs“ to explain this and offers some solutions.
A bit of a surprise but the number of the number of foreigners living in Seoul slowed last year and you can check out those stats in the Seoul city report.
