Every tried to login on to a Korean website from abroad and faced nothing but error messages or even no way to do so. There sometimes is an English version of the same site, but it doesn’t usually allow you access either and many times there is a lack of any kind of English interface. Even expats in Korea or those with an ARC find that access to many local Korean websites is simply impossible. Some of the ones that do work if you have an ARC or even just a passport are: Gmarket, KBS, Arirang TV and there are others too that have made their sites somewhat expat friendly, but many still do not. Well, the Korean government’s answer to that is iFriendly.kr and no that isn’t a Korean dating site where hook up and then get your Korean boyfriend or girlfriend to register on the site so you can use it.
Not only that, but the Korea Herald reported:
the government also set up a guideline for web masters to permit sign-up of expatriates living in Korea. The KCC sent the guideline to operators of a total of 800 Web portals, internet shopping malls, online game sites and other major websites.
The video they have explaining how to enter you name on the ifriendly.kr site is classic. The main point to takeaway from that is that when you sign up make sure you sign up for a Korean site that you copy your name exactly. If it is all caps and missing a space between your last name and middle because of some type then that is how you must enter your name.
